Arthrography is the x-ray examination of a joint that uses fluoroscopy and a contrast material. Arthrograms are particularly effective for detecting tears or lesions of the structures and ligaments of the joints, especially the knee, wrist and elbow, as well as rotator cuff tears or damage from a shoulder dislocation. They can help to determine the possible need for treatment, including surgery or joint replacement.

A computed tomography scan (CT or CAT scan), is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices) of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of the body, including the bones, muscles, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays.

A MRI is a diagnostic procedure that uses a large magnets, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body.
